What is the difference between a dark sky park, a reserve and a sanctuary?
They are tiers of the same DarkSky International program. An International Dark Sky Park is a single protected property with a lighting management plan. A dark sky reserve is a larger area with a dark core surrounded by a populated buffer that agrees to lighting rules. A dark sky sanctuary is the most remote category, given to isolated places with exceptional skies. There are also Dark Sky Communities, which are whole towns, and Urban Night Sky Places, which sit near cities.
Can I trust a dark sky map?
A dark sky map is the right place to start and the wrong place to stop. The widely used ones model glow spreading over a smooth earth, so they do not know about the ridge between you and the nearest town. They also model brightness at the zenith only, while most of what ruins a view sits near the horizon. Treat the map as a shortlist, then check access, terrain and moon phase.
What Bortle class should I look for?
Aim for Bortle 3 or better for a first dark sky trip. Bortle 1 to 2 is a truly dark sky where the Milky Way casts a faint shadow. Bortle 3 is rural, still excellent, and where most people say out loud that they have never seen anything like it. Bortle 4 to 5 is suburban, with the Milky Way surviving overhead but fading near the horizon. Above 6 the sky stops being the point.
